My story

I’m from Oaxaca Mexico descendent of Mixes (miles), also known as AYUUK JAAY (people of the florid language). I studied art at Bellas Artes College in Oaxaca with a specialty of painting and printmaking. My studio is located in the House of RAD, in Milwaukee’s River west neighborhood since 2022. My work is inspired by the analysis I make with myself about society and their cultures. I like to reflect on how I’ve adapted to and got involved with, new cultures far away from my childhood home, while the culture I had growing up refuses to leave me. I’ve lived in Milwaukee for almost twenty years now. During that time I’ve learned to adopt the culture. I see here and mix it with ideas from my AYUUK roots as myth, legends, and stories which you can see in most of my artwork. I enjoy working with wood for the texture it can bring to my work. The challenge is finding how to make it work when the wood grain is against you. I often will find alternatives like choosing a different tool or perhaps having to go in another direction. Working with a large woodblock has been a challenge I gladly accepted.

The future

I want to go bigger and bigger with the blocks, which one day I
hope to accomplish when I’m done with the current series of woodblock
I’m working on it.
